Doing things in Chaing Mai

Friday night I went to the Muay Thai, kickboxing. It was just OK, not really my thing but I had wanted to see what it was all about. There is lots of posturing and hugging, and knowing nothing at all about kickboxing, I sometimes thought the winners were losing. But it was the real deal, even I could tell there were some serious kicks and punches recieved - many fights are just for show/tourists.

Watching all men betting on the side was fun, I was tempted to put a bet on myself, but my Thai is not good enough. Kids as young as 12 were in the comps, and for such a aggressive sport, there was no anger or aggression amongst the spectators or competitors, but there was a heartbreaking look of defeat on the faces of some of the losers.

The feature match was between an English man who’d been training in Chiang Mai, and a Thai. The Thai won.

Feeling brave, yesterday I went in the ladies pool competition at Chiangers & Mash, the local Aussie pub that became a refuge in my first visit to CM (and also does fantastic chips). Pool is played everywhere here and I was bored being on the outside looking in, so I signed up. I was happily bumped out in the first round (unlucky, I sunk the black) and left to chat with some interesting Thai women of all ages and types.

Wednesday the pace will change dramatically when I go begin the vipassana meditation at Wat Ram Poeng. www.palikanon.com/vipassana/tapotaram/tapotaram.htm
Place your bets, I’m backing myself for 10 days, the full length of the introductory stay. The schedule is so empty it’s intimidating. Up at 4 am, meditate, 6 am breakfast, eaten alone, slowly. Wash up, then meditate. Lunch at 10.30 am (last meal of the day) then meditate, meditate, meditate until lights out at 10 pm. No books or phones (or laptops) or distractions allowed. Follow the link if you want to know more.

Still no money from the South African yet…

Sitting silently,
Doing nothing,
Spring comes,
The grass grows.
