Berlin
At the wall
This is my 11th day here, I leave in two more and wish I was staying longer. That says it all about Berlin. There have been the added bonuses of catching up with Sean here for a few days, he travelled many hours to come and see me & Berlin for a few days, and I've also had the lovely Karina, my mate from Amsterdam, to keep me company, but there's more...
The people of Berlin are very open, fun and helpful, the city is has lovely parks and buildings, the history is amazing, the weather's good, the food's good, the beer's good. The bars are fun and relaxed.
Funny fireman fountain, artsy Kreuzberg
Just a cool building in Schoneberg that I liked
I've experienced some great hospitality here. A relative of Sean's was able to give us a little flat for 6 days, then a friend of the relative, who I'd only just met, offered me a room for 3 nights when I realised a massive 4 day weekend was about to happen and I had no accommodation booked. Merci, Jean Marie!
The history of the wall and how what originally kept people apart, has now brought them together, is incredible. Apart from small signs it is physically difficult to identify the old east from the west, and socially, impossible. This is a town full of people who like to laugh and enjoy life, but also examine and understand it. A mulit-cultural town (Adolf would roll over in his unmarked bunker!) full of people who love it here. Economically still struggline, it is still growing into itself as a complete city, it has a youthfullness and a promise of becoming one of the greatest cities of art, culture and fun in the world.
Just over 1 year ago I made the decision to sell my little flat and go travelling, I'm still having a great time and have no regrets.
