Lanzarote, Canary Islands
I took a break last week to the Canary Islands (yeah, I know I have a tough life), Lanzarote, Puerto del Carmen. We got a cheap deal, flights and one week accommodation for less than AU$1000 for 2 people! Too good to miss, we got the chance to practice our Spanish for a week.
Lanzarote is a barren looking island, dotted with ancient and recent volcanoes (last eruption was 1800’s) the landscape is barren, evidence of the volcanic activity is everywhere. Cacti and succulents are the prevalne flora. The weather was a lovely 20ºC (cold for this time of year, most of the locals grumbled), in the mean time Ireland was experiencing some of the worst weather and highest rainfall in years.

It wasn’t warm enough to swim, but I jumped in the pool once just to see if I could. My legs were numb after 4 laps but a steaming shower got the blood flowing again.
I’d like to say we explored the remotest areas and saw many of the wonderful parts of the island, but except for one trip to the National Park (where the photos were taken), we mainly partied and relaxed and were lazy tourists.

Another proud achievement of mine was driving on the right hand side, in a manual. I couldn’t have done it without my trusty navigator, but it was incident and argument free and saved us having to do a tour. I can’t think of too many men who would have the confidence and patience to ride shotgun with me in that situation. Fair play to you Brown.

Now I am back in Mweenish, an island of the west coast of Ireland, about an hour from Galway. The Browns have been very hospitable and friendly, I am eating home cooked meals and saving some euros. I will stay here for an Irish Christmas. Not much chance of snow, but you never know.
We will probably go somewhere else (not sure where yet, depends on the good deals) for New Year and then back to Ireland again.
MERRY CHRISTMAS
